Chief Engineer, AI Dev Experience & Platform

We are hiring a senior individual contributor for our Developer Experience / DevSecOps Platform team, where we serve as the technical authority and strategist for enterprise AI developer enablement. This flexible role may require reporting to our Greensboro, NC office at least part of the time each week. We own the GitHub platform ecosystem and AI-assisted developer tooling to help teams build software faster, more securely, and more productively. We partner closely with enterprise stakeholders to evaluate emerging AI tools, define governance and best practices, and measure impact on delivery speed, code quality, and ROI. We also provide training, documentation, and advocacy to support adoption across the organization.

- Were looking for at least six years of experience working on projects that implement solutions using development life cycles such as SDLC.
- We need a minimum of four years in a technical leadership role, with or without direct reports.
- We require a bachelors degree in Computer Science, CIS, or a related field, plus at least ten years of experience in software development or a related area; equivalent work experience may be considered in place of the degree.

- We lead multiple workstreams by identifying customer and operational needs, shaping procedures and policies, securing cross-functional support, translating strategy into requirements, coordinating resources, tracking progress, removing blockers, and resolving highly complex issues.

- We provide expert guidance on complex technical solutions and innovative approaches that satisfy design and functional requirements.
- We partner with architects and software consultants to turn functional specifications into flexible, scalable, and maintainable solution designs.
- We support the development, configuration, and modification of integrated business and enterprise application solutions, acting as a technical escalation point for component-based application design and coding.
- We translate business needs and functional requirements into program designs, code modules, stable application systems, and software solutions.
- We build trusted relationships with internal customers, vendors, and senior leaders to maintain alignment and stakeholder support.
- We oversee the review and implementation of technical recommendations across multiple functions.
- We define the interfaces, methods, parameters, procedures, and functions needed to support technical solutions and ensure alignment with architecture.
- We shape data management strategy within the established information architecture, including secure information storage, sharing, and publishing.
- We set strategies for effective database technology use and provide specialist expertise in database tools, architectures, and facilities.
- We support project teams throughout release cycles and provide expertise for complex incident responses.
- We work with IT teams and vendors to ensure code follows architectural standards, design patterns, and technical specifications.
- We stay current on industry trends by attending conferences, building professional networks, and expanding our technical knowledge.
- We guide consultation efforts to ensure software solutions reflect industry best practices, strategies, and architectures.
- We offer expert advice on software engineering topics, including market trends, new programs, and applications.
- We review and validate resource estimates for complex design, coding, and testing efforts.
- We leverage DevOps, Waterfall, and Agile practices to design, develop, and deliver resilient, secure, cloud-based solutions across multiple channels and high-volume environments.
- We define enterprise strategy for AI-assisted developer tools, evaluate solutions through hands-on proofs of concept, and assess technical fit, security, compliance, and developer impact.
- We partner with our AI Council, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, Privacy, and Legal teams to manage risk and operationalize approved platforms.
- We own GitHub Enterprise and AI tooling standards, governance, usage policies, lifecycle management, cost models, vendor relationships, contracts, renewals, and roadmap alignment.
- We act as developer advocates by leading training, enablement, documentation, communities of practice, and communicating productivity and quality metrics to senior leadership.
